Alper Elected Chair of Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees elected Andrew M. Alper, AB ’80, MBA ’81, to a three-year term as the board’s Chair. An active alumnus since his graduation, Alper has served as a trustee since 1999, most recently as Vice Chair. He became Chair of the Chicago Initiative in 2005, leading the University’s landmark capital campaign to a record-breaking finish in 2008 with a total of $2.38 billion in gifts from 117,700 individuals, families, and organizations. After careers at Goldman Sachs and the New York City Economic Development Corp., Alper is now Chair of the asset management firm EQA Partners, LP. Jack W. Fuller and Paul G. Yovovich, AB’74, MBA’75, were elected Vice Chairs of the board.

Nondorf Appointed to Top Admissions Post

James G. Nondorf was named Vice President and Dean of College Admissions and Financial Aid. He was most recently Vice President for Enrollment and Dean, Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions, at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Prior to RPI, Nondorf worked for six years at Yale University as Director of Student Outreach and Associate Director of Admissions. Nondorf’s multifaceted campaigns to engage students more deeply helped both schools build some of their strongest classes, with an emphasis on matching the right student to the right institution, while building cultural and intellectual diversity.

O’Muircheartaigh Named Leader of Harris School

Colm O’Muircheartaigh, a longtime faculty member in the Harris School of Public Policy Studies, was appointed the school’s Dean. An applied statistician and Senior Fellow at NORC (National Opinion Research Center), where he served as Vice President for Statistics and Methodology from 1998 to 2004, O’Muircheartaigh takes the leadership role as the Harris School is poised for new growth. He is principal investigator on the National Science Foundation’s Internet Panel Recruitment Study, co-principal investigator on the National Social Life Health and Aging Project, and a leader in national and international organizations of statisticians. He previously served on the faculty of the London School of Economics and Political Science and was the first director of the LSE’s Methodology Institute.

Vokes Fills BSD/Medical Center Posts

Everett E. Vokes was appointed Interim Vice President for Medical Affairs, Interim Dean of the Division of the Biological Sciences and Pritzker School of Medicine, and Interim CEO of the University of Chicago Medical Center, effective October 1. An international authority on the treatment of head and neck cancer, lung cancer, and drug development, Vokes has had a prominent career in clinical and translational research, most recently as Chair of the Department of Medicine. The John E. Ultmann Professor in Medicine and Radiation & Cellular Oncology, he is also Deputy Director of the Cancer Research Center.

Rogers Named Chair of Laboratory Schools Board

Education champion John W. Rogers Jr. was named Chair of the Laboratory Schools Board of Trustees. Rogers, who graduated from Lab in 1976 and watched his daughter graduate last year, assumed the position after serving as Executive Co-Chairman of the Lab+ Campaign and more than 20 years on the board. Rogers is known nationally as founding Chairman and CEO of Ariel Investments, as well as a longtime supporter of President Barack Obama and Co-Chairman of his Inauguration Committee. Throughout his professional and philanthropic career, improving the quality of education for children in Chicago has been a central mission and priority for Rogers. He has been a trustee of the University of Chicago since 2000.

Lynch Is New Chief Safety Officer

Marlon Lynch, one of the nation’s leading figures in campus security, began duty in the newly created post of Associate Vice President for Safety and Security. He will lead a new department structured to better coordinate and more efficiently deliver public safety and transportation services, combining the University Police Department with Campus Transportation and Parking Services. Lynch, most recently Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Police at Vanderbilt University, is responsible for organizational integration, operational enhancements, and new security technology, and will expand training opportunities for police officers.
